Motivation: Motherhood

Ever since I can remember I have only wanted to be a mother. To the point that I really didn't give college much thought. My own mother didn't go to college until she was older and I just thought that I would marry prince charming, ride off into the sunset, and live happily ever after. A career was an obstacle, something that would get in the way of me being able to do what I really wanted to do.

Well, I thankfully grew out of that view and have gone to college. My college experience has not only been so fun, but also a great preparation tool of becoming what I have always wanted to be. A mother. Countless classes, countless hours in the library, countless homework assignments, countless tears, have all counted in this pursuit of becoming the best mother and wife I can be. In God's mercy I was led to a major that helps me in this pursuit.

Last week I read the talk "Moral Discipline" given by Elder D. Todd Christofferson. Reading this talk made me realize the strength that as a mother I am going to need to provide the uplifting and safe atmosphere I want my children to grow up in. The thing about motherhood that I have learned the most in the last 4 or 5 years is that whatever I become is most likely what my children will become. Hopefully as I get better they will become better than I am, but essentially they will learn everything that they need to know from me. Elder Christofferson says this, "The root of the word discipline is shared by the word disciple, suggesting to the mind the fact that conformity to the example and teachings of Jesus Christ is the ideal discipline that, coupled with His grace, forms a virtuous and morally excellent person."

I believe that Jesus Christ is our perfect example. I believe that through His grace I can become a true disciple of Him and that I can be a virtuous and morally excellent person. This is what I want for my children. I was blessed with a mother who was virtuous and morally excellent. I know that I will continually look to her example as I try to raise my family in truth and righteousness and in my quest to become a better daughter of God and disciple.
